Before you can have a ‘big diamond ring’ in your possession, you must know how to examine your diamonds first!

From my past experiences when talking to our customers who have come to us seeking a big diamond ring, usually as engagement ring, I have observed that many of our customers will happily order a big diamond ring as a symbol of a full life – a life that is determined or filled with priceless love, making them unwilling to order a diamond ring that is under 2 carats, because that, would not do them justice; that size is just not adequate to communicate the value they hold.

Even though many of our beloved customers have ordered big diamond rings without taking a second look at the costs, having a brilliant diamond ring with great price value is not something we should look over, especially when we are talking about diamond rings that are between 2 to 5 carats. You must know how to examine them in detail, strictly holding their qualities in check.

Therefore, in this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about buying big diamond rings. We will take a deep dive into 2 carat, 3 carat, 4 carat, and even 5 carat diamond rings, so that you may be able to buy a big diamond ring that matches all your sparkling specifications. Let us take a look at them together.

Big Diamond Rings – How Big Are They?

If we are talking about the size of big diamond rings in each carat, we can measure their table size of a round diamond as follows:

  • 2 Carat Diamond Ring: Approximate Table Size 8.19×8.19mm Weighs 0.4 Grams
  • 3 Carat Diamond Ring: Approximate Table Size 9.37×9.37mm Weighs 0.6 Grams
  • 4 Carat Diamond Ring: Approximate Table Size 10.32×10.32mm Weighs 0.8 Grams
  • 5 Carat Diamond Ring: Approximate Table Size 11.11×11.11mm Weighs 1 Gram
  • big carat diamond rings

But all in all, when we talk about the ‘carat’ of a diamond, it will mainly refer to the ‘weight’ of the diamond. The carat does not mean size in any way.

For example, if there were 2 5 carat diamond rings. One has a wider table with a more shallow body whilst the other has a narrower table with a deeper body – these two rings will have the same weight, which is 1 gram.

Assessing the Value of a Big Diamond Ring

Even though the price of a diamond will be measured per carat, the price per carat will increase exponentially with higher carats.

For example, a 2 carat diamond ring has a value of THB 450,000 per carat, it means that the value of a the diamond is 450,000×2 = THB 900,000
But for a 3 carat diamond ring of the same quality, the diamond has the value of THB 710,000 per carat, which means that the value of that diamond will be at 710,000×3 = THB 2,130,000

The same goes for diamonds that are similar in carat as well, even though they have similar carat sizes but if they are on a different carat level, there will be a price gap between them. For example, a 5 carat diamond ring and a 4.90 carat diamond ring will have up to a 5-15% of price difference.

    carat price

Because of this price leep, many will look for diamonds that are ‘almost’ at the carat weight that they want. For example, if you want a 5 carat diamond ring, you could also go for diamond rings that are just under that carat weight, at around 4.90-4.99 carat, to save your budget.

In truth, this is completely doable, but most of the time, our customers who order big diamond rings with us will just order a diamond ring with the carat size that they want because the number of the diamond carat itself is a sentimental value which many are willing to neglect the monetary price for.
And it is because of the sentimental, high demand, and rarity of big diamond rings that causes such a price difference at each carat level.

Other than this, if you are thinking about purchasing a big diamond ring, we recommend you not to limit yourself to only the carat of the diamond to save budget (For example, instead of looking at 1.90-1.99 carat diamond rings, you could also look at 2 carat diamond rings as well).

But we also want you to consider both diamond rings of the carat size that you want and diamond rings of similar carat sizes so that you will not miss out on a good deal – a big diamond ring that is of a high quality that is also worth every satang.

Where Should You Buy Your Big Diamond Ring?

    where to buy diamond ring

Most of the time, if you want to buy a big diamond ring, you will not be able to bring it home as a ready-made product, purchase it from cabinet diamond stores that we see in shopping malls or online stores. You will have to custom order it from a diamond store that has the expertise of finding a large carat diamond of high quality for you.

That is because selecting a diamond requires high expertise, a methodical selecting process, extensive experience which a diamond vendor will need to have as well as knowing a reliable diamond source – so that your large carat diamond with your specifications may be found.

That is why if you are looking to purchase a big diamond ring, you should visit the diamond vendor and consult their expert first as well as custom ordering your ring ahead of time and examining your diamond and its certification to see if that diamond is what you are looking for before you decide to set it into a ring.

How To Buy a Big Diamond Ring Like a Pro – the 4Cs of Diamond

In select diamond rings of 2 carats or higher, because they are highly valuable diamond rings, there will not be a lot of them in the market. Not only that, big diamonds with brilliant sparkles and master-crafted cuts are rare.

That is why when you are selecting a big diamond ring, you cannot just point your finger and select one without strictly examining the 4Cs (Clarity, Color, Cut, Carat) of the diamond. We have the method to select a big diamond ring like an expert by examining its clarity, color, and cut. They are as follows.

    1. Clarity

    a big carat diamond clarity

The clarity of a diamond is an indicator of ‘Blemishes’ or ‘Inclusions’, it tells us how flawed a diamond is. The fewer flaws, the higher the clarity which will directly affect the brilliance and beauty of the diamond.
The clarity of a diamond from best to worst are in this order:

  • Flawless (FL)
  • Internally Flawless (IF)
  • Very Very Small Inclusions 1 (VVS1)
  • Very Very Small Inclusions 2 (VVS2)
  • Very Small Inclusions 1 (VS1)
  • Very Small Inclusions 2 (VS2)
  • Small Inclusions 1 (SI1)
  • Small Inclusions 2 (SI2)
  • Inclusions 1 (I1)
  • Inclusions 2 (I2)
  • Inclusions 3 (I3)
  • Even though the clarity of a diamond will greatly affect the beauty of a diamond, most diamond flaws are not visible to the naked eye, this is why selecting a clarity grade will be a mostly-sentimental-process for the buyer. The difference in valuation between each clarity grade can be up to 5-20%.

As for 2 carat diamond rings, we recommend you to go for diamond rings that are, at the very least, in the VS1 grade. If you want to purchase a diamond within the VS2 clarity grade range, you should select one with flaws close to the edge of a diamond so the flaw may be hidden by a prong setting which will be used to set the diamond into your ring.

And for even larger big diamond rings, 3 carat diamond rings, 4 carat diamond rings, and 5 carat diamond rings – we recommend you select diamonds that have the clarity grade of at least VS2 and above. If you wish to purchase diamonds with lower clarity grades, such as S1, you should select one where the flaws are at the edge of the diamond as well.

With that being said, if you want to be confident that your big diamond ring will truly sparkle brilliantly, we recommend you to select your diamond to have the clarity grade of VVS1 or VVS2 with flaws that are not visible to the naked eye – that, would be best.

    2. Color

The color grade of a diamond tells us how ‘white’ the diamond is. It starts from the letter ‘D’ which is the highest diamond grade and ends at Z which has a clear yellow tint. The color grade of a diamond can affect its valuation up to 10-20%.

    colors of diamonds

If you purchased colorless diamonds (D, E, F) and almost colorless diamonds (G, H, I, J), if looked upon with a pair of naked eyes, will appear almost the same.

And in selecting 2 to 5 carat diamond rings, selecting the color grade of the diamond to match the color of the ring material can make your diamond appear purer.

For example, if you chose a J color grade diamond which is at the bottom of the almost colorless diamond grade, the diamond can appear more white when it is paired with a darker toned ring, such as a yellow gold ring or a rose gold ring but it will appear more yellow-tinted when it is paired with a white gold ring. For diamonds of H color grade or higher, they will look ‘white’ and colorless on all ring materials.
And for selecting big diamond rings that are pleasingly clear at its best value, we recommend you purchase your large diamond at the color grade of G, H, or I – they will still appear almost as colorless as diamonds with the D, E, or F color grade.

    3. Cut

perfect cut vs poor cut diamond

For selecting diamond rings between 2 to 5 carats, the cut of the diamond is considered the most important factor which will make your big diamond ring shine with brilliance. The more a diamond is symmetrically cut with expertise and the more experienced the artisan is, the more brilliance the diamond will effortlessly sparkle and shine. It will make the diamond appear clearer, even if the diamond’s color grade is not perfect (D).

shallow vs ideal vs deep cutting diamond

Therefore, in selecting a big diamond ring, we recommend you to purchase a diamond that is a ‘Triple Excellent Cut’ diamond, or simply 3EX. The 3EX consists of having excellent cut grade, excellent polish, and excellent symmetry – these qualities can all be examined in the diamond report that comes with the diamond.

    triple excellent diamond certificate

And because of these excellent qualities of the diamond’s cut, your diamond will have the best fire possible. The diamond will be able to reflect all the lights coming in at the most efficiency, making your big diamond ring and of great value.

Even though the cut of a diamond is an important factor that enables you to find a large diamond stone that sparkles with fire, at a great price, but in purchasing any diamond of any size – you will also have to inspect the other factors as well. That is why we want to summarize and recommend additional methods in selecting diamond rings that are higher than 2 carats.

  • The Diamond Must Come With a Certificate: It is a guarantee that your diamond will have all the specifications you seek. It must be certified by a trusted institute, GIA, HRD or IGI. In your diamond report, the 4Cs and other details about your diamond will be clearly stated.
  • Use the 4cs as Your Base: Consider the clarity, the color, and the cut that should be a 3EX.
  • Compare the Price of the Diamonds: Compare the prices with many vendors with the specifications you want.
  • Consult Experts: Tell your expert what you want in a diamond ring so that they can help you find a big diamond stone that is beautiful, high quality and worth its price.

A Big Diamond Ring and Its Ring Design

If you decide to purchase a diamond ring of 2 carats or higher, imagine 2 diamond rings, both of the same design, with one using a diamond no larger than 1 carat and the other using a big diamond – you will find that both rings give off distinctively different design tones; the symmetry when worn on your fingers, the luxury and how outstanding they are.

That is why when we are trying to find a beautiful diamond ring, its beauty will not depend only on the carat but it will also depend on the physical size of the diamond, the harmonious design, and the style of the wearer. We have techniques that we would like to recommend to you for diamonds of each carat size:

a 2 carat diamond solitaire ring

  • 2 Carat Diamond Rings: If you are looking to purchase a big diamond ring as an engagement ring or a wedding ring, a 2 carat diamond ring is considered a popular choice – its value will appear higher than just a 1 carat diamond ring and it will also appear more luxurious.
  • You can select the design for a 2 carat diamond ring as you wish because a 2 carat diamonds are just the right size when worn on your fingers and can fit well with any style.
You can make a 2 carat diamond appear more outstanding by using a halo setting, a pavé setting, or even a vintage style ring with delicate details. These options will all prevent your centerpiece diamond not to be drowned out by all the precious details of your ring.

    a 3 carat diamond ring

  • 3 Carat Diamond Rings: If you have a 3 carat diamond ring in your possession, you can effortlessly become the center of attention in your social circle. It is considered a statement piece that fully reveals the beauty of a diamond.
  • As for 3 carat diamond rings, the diamond will start to appear large when worn on your fingers. If you are looking to purchase the ring as an engagement ring or a wedding ring for your prospective bride, we recommend you to select ring designs that are not too thick in width or too detailed because it will ‘overflow’ the already outstanding diamond. It will be overdoing it.
As for the designs of a 3 carat diamond ring, we recommend you to select designs that leave space open for the diamond to fully shine. A solitaire setting or a pavé will greatly complement the large diamond as well.

5 carat pear shaped diamond on pave solitaire ring

  • 4 Carat Diamond Rings and 5 Carat Diamond Rings: Because 4 carat diamond rings and 5 carat diamond rings are quite large when worn on your fingers, the appropriate designs of these big diamond rings will depend on the size of the wearer’s finger as well.
  • If you have slender fingers, if you were to decorate them with a 4 carat diamond ring or a 5 carat diamond ring with side stones or ‘Three-Stone Design’ ring, it may make the ring too wide and uncomfortable to wear.

But if you have average-sized or larger sized fingers, you can increase the extravagance of your diamond ring by decorating your diamond ring with side stones as your desires dictate, because the size of the ring will still be proportionate to your fingers.

Or if you are looking for extravagance at its highest with 4 carat diamond rings and 5 carat diamond rings, you can do so by making it a halo ring or choosing a ‘Two-Band Ring’ design that will harmoniously bond to a big diamond ring without making the diamond appear smaller.

A Secret Technique: In custom ordering a big diamond ring, you should use at least a 6 prong setting, and the material of the prong should be platinum to prevent the diamond falling out, or an even surer option, you can choose to use a ‘Bezel Setting’.
